Why are there little holes on the greens again?

When the weather allows us to, we like to aerate the greens every 2 weeks. We do this by running a spiked roller over the greens to penetrate the surface, we then follow that up with a cut afterwards to roll back down any bumps caused by the spikes entering and leaving the turf.

Why do we do this?

Greens see the most foot traffic on the course and all this traffic causes compaction of the soil. By spiking we open the ground back up and relieve the compaction. This allows space to promote root growth while also making it easier for water, air and any nutrients or fertilisers to get past the organic layer and straight to the rootzone.

This all makes for healthier soil and healthier grass!

We are now double award winners in 2024 and we're only in February!

Video produced by England Golf for their Centenary Dinner & Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday 13th of February we heading up North again as we were shortlisted for our 2nd sustainability award. This time we headed to the Midland hotel Manchester - the place where England Golf was "born" 100 years ago to the day!

England Golf put on a great show, celebrating their centenary year and we were thrilled just to be a part of it.

With The Bedfordshire picking up the first award of the evening, all fingers were crossed on our table when it was the turn of "Sustainability Project of the Year" - and we did it!

We are over the moon to have picked up a second award in recognition of our sustainability practises - we are so passionate about protecting our planet and we hope that these awards prove that you don't have to be a huge golf course with big budgets to make the right decisions for the environment.

From installing solar and utilising renewable energy, to implementing organic turf care, recycling and re-purposing wherever possible and supporting local - there is so much we can do, and there is so much more we want to do! Watch this space!

Everybody wants a perfect roll when putting and there are ways that you can help us deliver that!

By repairing yours, (and other people's), pitchmarks!

An unrepaired or even an improperly repaired pitchmark can take weeks to fully recover - in which time it can cause balls to veer off line and the damaged area is also an entry point for weeds which cause many other problems for a smooth surface.

Repairing a pitchmark properly is quick and simple - all you need is a pointed object whether that's a tee or a repair tool! Start by inserting your tool behind the mark and you want to gently push the top of the tool towards the centre of the indent (avoid lifting the turf as this can damage the roots). Continue to work your way around the mark pushing towards the centre of the indentation, once finished all that's left is to gently tap it down with your putter and admire your handywork.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the UK Environmental Golf Club of the Year Award 2024, hosted by the STRI Group and Sponsored by The R&A Golf.

The awards are in their 29th year and the room was filled with inspirational clubs and individuals, it was an absolute honour to be a part of it. We’ve come away having met some fabulous people and have learned a lot - full of ideas and itching to get started on some new sustainable projects.
Thank you to STRI Group for running the awards and promoting how awesome golf courses and their members can be in protecting our planet.
